These are Pearls of exceptional quality - very uniform in size, shape, color and luster. The 2 1/4" Deluxe Streamer crucifix and 7/8" Wreath Framed Miraculous center are die struck sterling silver, satin finished with laser engraved highlights. NOTE: Akoya Pearls are renowned for their luster and are considered the classic pearl. They have a pink undertone that distinguishes them from freshwater pearls. Found primarily in the coastal waters of Japan and China, Akoya Pearls are cultured in the Pinctada fucata martensii, known as the Akoya oyster. Only one pearl is grown at a time in one oyster, as the Akoya oyster is the smallest of the Pearl producing mollusks. Akoya Pearls are grown for only one year. Freshwater pearls are cultured in different types of mollusks found in lakes and rivers, mainly in China. Several freshwater pearls may be grown in the same oyster and are left to grow for several years. Both saltwater and freshwater, are Cultured Pearls. The difference between natural Pearls and Cultured Pearls is that a natural Pearl develops by chance around an irritant that causes the oyster to produce nacre, a substance that coats the irritant and forms a Pearl, and a Cultured Pearl is developed by seeding a piece of shell or tissue from another oyster or in the case of Akoya pearls, a pre-formed bead, into the oyster intentionally by a process developed by Mikimoto in Japan. The oyster then produces nacre to form a pearl around it.

NOTE: There are over 2,000 varieties of Coral around the world. It is formed by the Calcium Carbonate secretions of small sea creatures called sea polyps, some of which are free swimming and some of which are anchored to other material in the Coral Reefs. This Coral from the Pacific Coral Reefs is naturally grayish white. It is usually bleached and then dyed pale pink to vivid crimson red, giving it the same appearance as more expensive Italian Coral, which is naturally colored from the Mediterranian Sea. The Italian Corals rarely grow bigger than 3-4mm, which is why it is rare to find larger size beads of Italian Coral.
